A Golden Glow. A Brilliant Blue.

What colors light within your mind upon the utterance of autumn? Mine, I’m sure, are not like most.  Oh, I do, indeed, love autumn.  I love the colors, the sounds, the smells.  More than not, however, I am usually drawn to the overcast days baring steel gray skies as backdrop to dark dampened bark and leaves which permeate outwards rich hues of red and orange from deep inside. Normally, this richness is blotted out by the bright overwhelming sun, like that of a photograph overexposed.

Today was different.  Out on an errand in the early afternoon I was compelled to delay course and detour through the park.  The brilliance of the blue sky was richly intense, and I dared to find something worthy as accompaniment.   Disappointment began to set when suddenly a glimmer, warm and vivid drew my eyes and turned my head.

Rising above the crest of a hill, golden flecks dance in the wind; the brilliant blue sky, a perfect contrast to the golden glow.  My father’s favorite of the fall colors, and in this moment, I must wholeheartedly agree. Appearing nearly translucent, these leaves of golden yellow blaze, enhanced as the full sun washes upon….., nay, permeates throughout their every fiber of being, illuminating to the fullest their glorious beauty within.

It’s within walking distance. The route also happens to take me right past my 13 year old, 7th Grade, son’s bus stop, and my timing would be such that he and his schoolmates would be there. I’ve planned it this way as I feel it may display an important message to some of those kids. I forewarn my son of my plans and ask how he wants me to acknowledge him…… or not. With no clear answer before he bounds out the door minutes before me, I tell him I will take his lead.

Smiles rise upon my face and within my heart as I see my son bounce into view at the end of our street, away from his friends, searching for me. Eyes connecting, he bounces out of view once more until I make my turn at the corner. Standing with some girls, he casts glances towards me as I continue my approach. The first and only words I hear are, “…my mom,” as he strides over to me trying so very hard to appear casual yet plastered upon his face is an embarrassed happy grin and we continue walking side-by-side several paces before he breaks off to join a couple friends, one of whom I know, and who makes a most apparent expression of puzzlement. As I continue walking, I utter one simple word, solving the question I know lies within his mind. “Voting.”

It’s just a matter of thyme…

Do you have too much thyme on your hands?  Personally, I don’t believe that is possible. Each day, it seems, I find myself going outdoors to gather herbs for the culinary creation of the moment, and find myself most often stopping to take snippets of thyme away with me.

This morning thyme and effort were both instrumental in the success of a potato, ham and cheese skillet.  Just ask my son, who devoured his and further polished off mine.  Thyming, I have more and more come to realize, is everything.  Baking. Broiling. Stove-top. Crock-pot.  Whipped into Spreads. Tossed into Salads.  Think that covers it all?  Here’s one for you.  Popcorn.  Ah, yes.  Melted butter (or drizzled olive oil), Parmesan, and a bit of your thyme.
